MY VIEW. MY TAKE.-CHETAN BHAGAT REVOLUTION 2020-LOVE.CORRUPTION.AMBITION- The ISBF Gazette_Issue V
Chetan Bhagat'slatest novel isn't about revolutions, as the title suggests. It's about three love triangles, and is set in Varanasi's engineering entrance exam. The love story is set on the holy ghats of Varanasi. It's not as speedy than the river which flows through one of India's most bustling temple cities. It is the backdrop to 'Revolution 2020. It's a story about childhood best friends Raghav, Gopal and Aarti and how they struggle to find love and happiness.
Gopal his son, retired teacher, stricken with litigationand financial debt was sure to fall over head and in love with the daughter of District Magistrate from the time he stole one of her chocolate cake during lunch. Through the unfortunate incident, the relationship that started in the fifth grade slowly took root through the Ganga.
It was filled with boat trips and incomprehensible love songs. Aarti is the daughter of Aarti. She is honest but does not be afraid to look the other way when corrupt deals are made. Raghav was the second of the trio, and is the extremely intelligentboy who comes from the nearby village that many believe will be the shining star of the town's small population. He has already passed the JEE exam, which is considered an exam that is the Holy Grail for examinations. Bhagat is trying to think about the Indian private education system that can be the sole hope for thousands of students who live in small towns. Bhagat gives a glimpse at the admissions exam coaching system.
This is a dark and eerie representation of what it looks like for students that travel to the far reaches of India to follow the course that is designed to brutally eliminate the weakest. Bhagat's description and concept of a revolution by people are not just simplistic, but as well, it's not complete. The reader is left to speculate until the end what the nature of the revolution would be, if and when it occurs. Instead of being reduced to a couple of chapters at the end, Revolution 2020 deserves more time and better indulgence.
Revolution 2020 isn't the central topic of the book, so the title could've been any other. The average reader is likely to anticipate more novel material than a typical two-boys-love the same story about a girl who is that is laced with corruption.
